The resting place of Ho Chi Minh. He lies in state here, the centrepiece of a macabre ritual public
visitation. The visitors queue up at the Ho Chi Minh museum, some 500 meters from the mausoleum. From
there they march single-file down the street and into the twisty, windy, halls of the mausoleum where
stone-faced guards protect the sanctity of Uncle Ho. No cameras allowed, thank-you, as such would be
undignified behaviour. Ho Chi Minh lies in a glass case, his sallow face, tinted like a wax museum
figure by a most unusually coloured illumination. The eight guards in the small antechamber seem not
to notice this, nor anything else. During visiting hours the broad avenue in front of the mausoleum
as well as the park from which this photo was shot, are closed to public access unless otherwise escorted
by guards.
