The band of trees are an oasis formed from glacial runoff squeezed out of the Qilian Shan (shan means
'mountain range' in this case). At this point, somewhere between Zhangye and Jiuquan in the Hexi corridor,
the spaces between Oases grows progressively larger while the Oases themselves get smaller, and smaller...
