From the morning of the second day out. After spending nearly all the previous day climbing out of
Hami, this morning has been spent in practical free-fall. This is the bottom. Hungry and thirsty,
I've stopped here to munch on a Hami melon (about the size and shape of a rugby ball, and tastes like
a smooth, sweet, perfect cantaloupe). I'd found the thing on the side of the road. Actually, this
section of highway was a vegetarian's delight as the overloaded trucks were constantly dribbling their
load onto the roadside. Tomatoes and onions I'd found had partially constructed the previous night's
campsite dinner. Anyway. There's a short, steep climb ahead. A truckstop at the top of the hill,
then it's downhill nearly all the way to Shanshan. A deliciously long downhill. Forever and
ever.
