I've stuck this in the thumbnail list for engineering feats. It's easy to
forget just how significant an accomplishment the transcontinental railroads were. If you look at the
maps, you might wonder why the railroad, old Route 66 and even the Interstates appear to take such a
round-about route to get where they're going. In a word: W A T E R! Steam engines are as thirsty for
it as the passengers. More so. So the routes follow the springs.
