Art Department Biography
I have been set decorating and production designing films since
my first gig in 2001 as Co-Key Set Decorator and On-set Dresser
for Salmon Chanted
Evening (IMDb
entry). This short film began as one of three winners
in the inaugural CBC screenwriting contest and would eventually
be nominated for several Leo
Awards, including Best Production Design. Heckuva start,
eh?
The second gig was Art Directing For My Father, (IMDb)
an NSI Drama Prize winner,
followed by Lingering, an SFU 4th-year student film
project which I production designed. I finished off 2001 by
set decorating another short, Metaphor, an Indepent
Film Center production. In addition to primary duties as
dresser and designer for all these films I also acted as On-set
Dresser.
2002 began with my first feature, Shattered Souls
(IMDb) as Key
Set Decorator and On-set Dresser. The rest of the year yielded
credits in 7 more productions including shorts, commercials
and features with various art department responsibilities and,
more often than not, duties as On-set Dresser.
2003 added IATSE 891 set dresser permittee status and continued
the trend to larger productions beginning with three television
series (The Eileen Chang Story -- Set Decorator,
John Doe -- Set Dresser/Onset Dresser and Battle Star
Gallactica -- Set Dresser). I finished the year
with two feature films (Window
Theory -- Production Designer, and Chestnut: Hero
of Central Park -- Onset Dresseer).
2004 .... well, it was a bad year for everybody. I did earn
a Production Design credit for Floored by Love, a 1-hour
TV Drama and had fun and success with a number of shorts including
Flush (Winner Best Short PEI Flim Festival and a Leo
for Best Actress in a short).
2005 picked up again with six Onset Dresser credits for FBI:
Negotiator, Gray Matters (Heather Graham, Tom Cavanaugh
and Bridget Moynahan), The Tooth Fairy, Wickerman (Nicholas
Cage), Murder on Pleasant Drive and, finally, Connor's
War (AKA "Eyes").
2006 is running along smoothly and still in Onset Dresser mode,
which I like. After a couple brief projects the hit ABC Family
television series Kyle XY came calling followed by
Last Chance Cafe (Kevin Sorbo of Hercules and
Andromeda). and a short stint filling in on Luna:
The Way Home. The next project, Diary of a Binge Drinker,
starts shooting in Victoria the last week of August.
As much personal and professional fulfillment as Production
Design brings, that sense of creating a world, I just love being
on set and working with the unique aesthetic problem solving
conditions around the camera.
